A new model is required with the mandate of assembling the necessary skills under one roof in order to develop drugs for rare mitochondrial diseases that affect over 100,000 children. Today there are no treatments. These diseases are highly debilitating and lead to premature death.
Imagine an organization whose sole focus is to leverage insights made by researchers and clinicians into drug development initiatives. Furthermore, imagine that these dedicated doctors and scientists have a common place to work and a network that enables them to communicate and cross-pollinate ideas generated from many disciplines. Now introduce key chemistry and biology tools to enable drug development, and galvanize the system with a common vision of understanding biological energy, health and disease. That is Human Energy Project.
HEP is a new type of organization. It is both catalyst and workplace. As a starting point, it will generate enabling tools essential for the development of drugs for mitochondrial diseases. That is its scientific and medical contribution. But HEP's vision does not stop there. HEP will, in addition to building necessary technologies, create efficiencies through leadership, commitment, accountability and an interactive community.
